Thanks for the hints.
I am using released v0.2.0 of govmomi client for testing and it seems that the 
clone of vmware’s repo in juju is not the most recent one - at least the tag 
v0.2.0 does not exist there. Maybe the issue can be resolved by simply updating 
this dependency in juju.
However I’ve further tracked down this issue via a local HTTPS proxy 
application and it seems that the first 3 requests are working fine and number 
4 is producing a wrong result:

Request 1 RetrieveServiceContent -> OK
Request 2 Login -> OK
Request 3 RetrieveProperties -> OK

The vSphere API endpoint is returning a HTTP 200 code with above garbage as 
content. What would be the appropriate command in govc command line client? To 
me this looks like a server side problem :(
