Do you know you can simulate this with Edit Attribute > Attribute 
Calculator (Beanshell)
to add a column with area, you just have to pick the example on the 
right side of the dialog
You can have "dynamic" behaviour by checking dynamic option.

You also have the tool View > Display attributes on the map which 
displays perimeter/area
as tooltips by just overflying features.
I just noticed that it does not work well with geographic coordinates as 
it only display a few
decimals
