OJ still need developping time to find a complete
solution since it requires a core modification of the
softeware. As far as I know similar software (Kosmo
and GvSIG) srtill didn't find a solution for similar
reason.
Anyhow both methods on page
http://openjump.org/wiki/show/Using+Your+Own+(Geologic)+Symbology
are quite useful for most common needs, so:
*) if you need to show only a type of symbols with no
attribute value on you map, use vertex symbols
(http://openjump.org/wiki/show/Using+Your+Own+(Geologic)+Symbology
- Part 1)
*) If you need to have different symbols according to
attribute value, use my method
(http://openjump.org/wiki/show/Using+Your+Own+(Geologic)+Symbology
- part 2) which doesn't require vertex symbols plugin

B)No way to use fonts with vertex symbols, anyhow if
the question is "How to have a reference table from
your favorite font symbols (ex ESRI geology.TFF)" see
the method below:

For Windows User (chech alternative way for Linux)
1) download any version of Fontcreator of High Logic.
It is not freeware nor Opensource but it gives 30
times working which is enough to print all the
reference table
2) Install it
3) start Fontcreator. On "File" menu go to "installed
font..." or "Font file.." (the latter if font is not
installed)
4) on the new window "Open Installed font" choose the
font you want to open (ex "ESRI geology")
5) A new table of font is displayed. This window is a
reference table of the ESRI font. You will see for
each symbol the referred font
6) click on the keyboard the "STAMP" cursor to copy
the screen image. Open a raster software (the GIMP or
Photoshop) and click CTRL+V to paste the image to a
new document.
7) print it. You have the reference table of your
selected font.

NOTES: You will see in the reference table that some
symbols are easy to understand (ex "R" represent an
arrow pointing downwards), Others are difficult to
use since they represent cursors of different keyboard
(ex. "yen" which would represent an open quarry (in
Italian geology) isn't present in my Italian
Keyboard).
So, dipending the type of keyboard you have, you can
use only some of them (probabily a good 90% which is
quite enough)
That's way I create a new geological symbols font with
a reference table that may be used only letteres ol
latin alphabet and numbers which are presents in all
the keyboards. See
http://openjump.org/wiki/show/Using+Your+Own+(Geologic)+Symbology
for details.
I want to extend my geological font but I need 1) to
know which are the most common symbols that geologists
in the World use 2) to redraw fonts to avoid copyright
probles 2) to map all the fonts to keyboards cursors
which maybe international and not connected to
national or different alphabet. And it takes some
time.

Cheers

Peppe

PS- You may find an Opensource font software to
customize your fonts. You can see on this page:
