Well the initialize method looks OK.  I see you've commented out the
selectionManager = context.getLayerViewPanel().getSelectionManager();
which will not be valid at initialization time.

I'm not sure what updateUIForAction(ActionEvent e) is supporting.
What about your execute() method?
