Hi to all,

After a long waiting period, it's already available the new 1.2.1 version of Kosmo - Free Desktop GIS (yeah!! ;-) , at least we finished it !!). This new version is an update of the 1.2 version that includes a bunch of bug fixes made to the 1.2, as well as some additional improvements that we have included (don't confuse with the next Kosmo Desktop version, which it'll contain all the new features that we have comment for the last months: new printing module, advanced topology rules, ...).

The Windows ([1]) and Linux ([2]) versions are already available (with JRE 1.6, the recommended version, and without JRE, for those that have already installed the JVM). For those that you have already installed the 1.2 version, it's also available a update zip file with the files that must be updated over the 1.2 version (in order to install it, uncompress the zip file and copy the \bin directory to the 1.2 install directory, overwriting the existent files). It's also available the source code for the new version ([3]).

In order to improve the Windows Vista Kosmo install, the Windows installed have been changed to behave in a more appropiate manner that the 1.2 one.

The list of new features, improvements and bug fixes is the next:

================
= New features =
================

* General

- Kosmo.ini file – Added a new configuration file “kosmo.ini” at the Kosmo \bin directory that allows to configure a set of parameters. Most of them where included in the language files in previous versions and have been extracted to avoid some problems detected with the traductions. Apart from this, this file allows to modify the Kosmo starting splash image (splash_image parameter), the application icon (app_icon parameter) and the background image at the Help > About windows (about_image parameter). As an additional feature it's possible to set a background image in the Kosmo window (desktop_image parameter). By default no image is set.

- Kosmo Windows installer – A new Kosmo Desktop Windows installer have been prepared to improve the installation of the application under Windows Vista. Apart from this, if the user hasn't got any Java virtual machine installed in his computer, the installer would open a download url in order to download and install it.

* Graphic interface

- New languages – Added the new languages Czech (supplied by Jan Helebrant) y Catalan (supplied by Isimat Geográfica, http://www.isimatgeo.es)

- Language updates – Added the language updates to Italian (supplied by Giuseppe Aruta, http://www.openjump.org), German (supplied by Johannes Sommer) y Russian (supplied by Sergey Smirnov, http://www.yugniro.crimea.com).

- New main toolbar buttons – Added two new button to the main toolbar: Localization by coordinates and Extension manager. These new buttons will allow to access to both functionalities faster than before.

* Simbology

- Line labelling – Turning – The line labelling algorithm have been modified in order to avoid that a label configured to be positioned over the line would be faced down (this would happen if the line is digitalized in the reverse sense from habitual). If the label is faced down, its angle its changed to turn it around.

- Line labelling – Rotation angle – The Kosmo line labelling algorithm have been modified in order to make that a label configured to be positioned following its line to follow more closely the line angle at its anchor point.

* Datasources
- WMS – WMS 1.3.0 server suppor – Added the functionality to connect to 1.3.0 WMS servers.

- WMS – Client transparency – Added the possibility to assign a transparency to the image obtained from a WMS server at client level (not confuse with the transparency parameter sent to the server).

* Extensions

- Kosmo 1.2 Additional tools extension – Added to new geometry simplifying tools to the Conversion menu: “Douglas-Peucker simplification” y “Topology preserving simplification (JTS)”

================
= Improvements =
================

* Configuration

- proxyUser and proxyPassword parameters – Added the necessaryh code to take into account this parameters when the internet connection proxy needs user and password validations.

* Edition

- Remove last inserted vertex – The functionality of this tool have been applied to the Continue linestring tool.

* Extensions

- Geoprocessing wizard, Spatial Join – Added the possibility to save the distance from the source feature to the target one in an existent field at the new layer or in a new field.

- Geoprocessing wizard - Dissolve – Added the possibility to add a field to count the number of elements that forms each of the result geometries for each aggregation.

* Tools

- Join Feature – Geometry simplification – This tool have improved to simplify the result geometry. E.g., if two simple lines that share their ending vertexes are joined, the result geometry will be simplify to a simple line (instead of a multilinestring one). Also the tool options dialog have been modified to clarify what feature has been selected to take its attributes and copy them to the joined one.

- Meassure area – Simbology – The simbology associated to the area layer has been modified, so by default a semitransparent color is choosen, in order to improve the visualization of the underlaying features.

- Draw polygons – The behaviuour of all the drawing polygon tools have been changed to show the resulting polygon closed while the polygon is drawn.

- Tools > Topological > Validate selected layers – Selectable validations – The validation selection dialog have been changed in order to allow only those validations that are according to the selected layers geometry type:

- Bookmark manager – Tools – Added the possibility to move bookmarks between different categories. The bookmark can be dragged to the desired position o the movement tools included in the bookmark contextual menu can be used: “Move to the end”, “Move to the beginning” and “Move to the category XXXXX”.

* Graphic interface

- View/edit attributes – Toolbar – The attribute view/editing table toolbar have been moved to the upper part of the window to improve its vissibility:

- Load layer/table – Directory content refresh – When the load data dialog is opened, if the selected format is a file type one, the current directory content is refreshed to show any changes made outside of Kosmo.

- Layer info > Database layers – The layer information has been changed so if the layer datasource is a database, the schema and table name is shown:

* Datasources

- Oracle – No EPSG code found for the Oracle SRID – The Oracle connection driver has been changed so if there is no correspondency between the Oracle SRID code and a EPSG code in the conversion table, the current view projection will be assigned to the new layer. The user would have to assign the appropiate projection to his data in this case (and the transformation if it would be necessary) to see the data properly.

- Oracle – Geographic projections (Longitud/Latitud) – The queries used to draw Oracle layers have been changed to make them compatibles with those layers stored with geographic projection (Lat/Lon).

- Shape files / DBF files – Coding – Added the possibility to select the coding type for shape and dbf files in order to load them correctly if their coding isn't the default one (by default the ISO-8859-1 format is selected, as it was selected internally in previous versions):

- Load layer from database – Connection dialog – The connection dialog have been modified so by default the PostGIS connection is selected:

- Load layer from database – Filter in the schema selection combobox – When the connection to the database is stablished, only those schemas that contains at least one geometric table are shown:

- MDB files – Connection dialog – The connection dialog have been improved to organized it in a more logical form. The comboboxes have been alphabetically sorted::

- DXF files – Loading speed – The loading speed for this files has been improved for this file type.

* Simbology

- Advanced style editor – Fill – The advanced style editor have been changed to make it similar to the basic one when configuring the polygon fills:

- Advanced style editor – Line styles – The advanced style editor have been changed to make it similar to the basic one when configuring the line dashing:

- Labelling – Numeric fields – The feature labelling have been changed so if a layer is labelled using a numeric field, the number of decimals that are shown in the label can be setted using the appropiate tab at the Kosmo configuration dialog (File > Configuration... > Advanced, Viewing options tab):

=============
= Bug fixes =
=============

* Configuration

- Default directories – Fixed an error that the configured valued were not taken into account when a table is loaded (DBF/MDB files)

* General

- Save files (projects, datasources, simbology, etc.) – Fixed an error that appeared while saving a file with '.' characters inside its name. This could provoke that the correct extension wouldn't be added to the file name.

* Tools

- Fence layer – Fixed the behaviour for this tool to refresh correctly the drawed polygons and that they could be editable..

- View/Edit attributes – Zoom/Flash a feature from the table – Fixed a problem that appeared when a row from the table is selected while the table associated view is iconified.

- Meassure distance / Meassure area – Geographic projection views – The algothim used have been modified to show a more accurate meassure when the view have a geographic projection.

* Graphic interface

- Tables – Header – Fixed a bug that appeared when the table columns and the rest of the data went unsynchronized while moving the horizontal scroll bar.

* Datasources

- Shape / DBF files – Boolean fields – Fixed a bug that could make that the dbf file was not correctly written if the layer includes boolean fields.

- Shape / DBF files – Integer values out of range – Fixed a bug that could make that the DBF file wasn't correctly written if a > 216 integer value is saved.

- PostgreSQL – Numeric type fields– Fixed a bug for this field type.

- WMS – TIME parameter – The TIME parameter is now correctly sent to the WMS server.

- WMS – Envelope – The maximum envelope for some WMS servers are correctly calculated.

- WMS – Zoom to WMS layer – Fixed a bug that appeared when zooming to some WMS layers.

- DXF files – Loading errors – Fixed some errors that appeared when loading some DXF files in Kosmo.

* Simbology

- Point symbology – Rotations – Fixed a bug that appeared when rotated point features where drawn in a print map.

- Polygon symbology – External graphic fill– Fixed a bug that apperared when a SLS file was saved with a polygon symbol that included a external graphic fill (the associated graphic file could be recoverd incorrectly).

- PostgreSQL – Multipoint layers – The rendering algorithm have been modified to draw this type of layers correctly.

- PostgreSQL – Line labelling – The rendering algorithm have been modified to draw the labels associated to a line layer correctly if label possition is assigned to line position.

- Selection – Multipoint layer – The selection rendering algorithm have been changed to draw this type of layers correctly.
