   The answer is 'no' - but it's an interesting idea.  I don't know enough 
about how proxy servers work I'm afraid - I *thought* that http connections 
allowed for proxy information to be set in the connection data, which the 
proxy can then use to route the http message to the correct destination? 

   AFAIK, there's no similar facility in LDAP.  However, you can certainly 
run a 'redirector', an external program listening on, say, port 80, that 
then sends the data on to port 389 (or whatever) elsewhere.  There's a 
simple one of these in the jxplorer cvs repository, but there are probably 
better ones available. 

   Another possibility would be setting up an ssl tunnel or something?
