Better would be
swipe one direction (ie to the right) to mark
swipe in the other direction (ie to the left) to delete

It's almost there...if you swipe a message it will check/mark it and
then you just have to hit the delete key. I agree with you, would like
swipe to delete the message, but others like to use swipe to mark
multiple messages for other actions. May an option in the future.
