I have not allowed K-9 mail to communicate with these servers and as far as I'm aware this hasn't affected the functioning of the app ie. I'm not aware of any email not being sent / received. The Android firewall I'm using is called NoRoot Firewall. I am using a couple of mailservers for three different mail accounts, one (for two accounts) on the hosting.zen.net.uk domain and gmail's default SMTP / IMAP servers for the other. Hope that helps.
