Between those releases of K-9 changes were made in the way K-9 handles STARTTLS. In previous releases there was a "starttls if available" option. That was removed (I suspect because it provided a false sense of security) and now the options ssl/tls, starttls (implicitly "always") and none. I believe that most times the error you are reporting is because you are trying to use STARTTLS, but your server doesn't really support it.
