I often expierienced a similar issue after sending a big amount of small files
with K-9.

K-9 moved them from out to sent and I thought the mail went well.

But the receiver complained about having got empty files.

When I opened my sent mail in the sent folder, I noticed that only some of
those files had a size of 0 kB.

This happened several times whenever I tried to send big amounts of about 12+
attachments each of minor size.

So now I always check the sent mail folder whether the size of attachments is
all right.

When I try to delete a big amount of mails 200+ K-9 usually crashes.

So I assume it has stack issues handling very many items.

Hmm, outgoing mail size limits are usually set by the mail service provider,
right?
