Study Skills from TESS: 'Succeeding in your university studies'
http://www.theschooldaily.com/articleView.asp?articlePK=11986

This week: Listening and note-taking. Using branching notes. Now we're
going to look at a particular type of note-taking called branching
notes. This type of note-taking is especially useful when you have not
been given an outline of the lecture; because you can develop the
structure of the notes as you go along. It is therefore a very flexible method of
note-taking. Some people think that this way of taking notes helps them
to remember the ideas more easily and see relationships between ideas
more clearly ...

Parents and Teens Column: 'Yes, Your Teen is Crazy'
http://www.theschooldaily.com/articleView.asp?articlePK=12422

Book review: 'Yes, Your Teen is Crazy: Loving Your Kids Without Losing
Your Mind' By Michael Bradley, Ed.D. Raising a teenager was never
supposed to be like this. In today's world, every thirteen-year-old
child lives with issues like sex, violence, drugs, alcohol, divorced
parents, and easy access to guns. Yet in this new and sometimes
terrifying 21st century, many parents struggle in vain to raise teens
with 30-year-old rules that no longer work. When they fail, they often
withdraw from their kids, stunned by feelings of impotence and
helplessness ...

New police vetting requirements - an opinion
http://www.theschooldaily.com/articleView.asp?articlePK=12421

'From Linda Woon' An issue not on the same ethereal plane as
democracy and assessment, but one which is going to seriously affect the
quality of educational experience we can offer, is related to the new
police vetting requirements. Of course we must do everything we can to
keep our children safe. But the latest requirements to have every
volunteer vetted is over the top. This affects every class trip, even if
it is for an hour, the whole class and with loads of adults present.
This affects every volunteer who comes in to hear reading. This affects our
Open Door policy and the invitation for our families to be welcomed into
the classrooms at anytime. This affects our swimming programme where we
rely on a ratio of 1:4. This affects our relationship with our community

The Cooper Column: 'School libraries 'a place for leisure and
relaxation .. where all can feel welcomed and relaxed''
http://www.theschooldaily.com/articleView.asp?articlePK=12316

School libraries are an important part of the learning process
yet they seldom gain the attention they deserve. In the primary sector
they are almost totally ignored in building codes and staffing schedules.
School administrations struggle to overcome this by creating libraries
out of whatever they can. The secondary sector is certainly better than
this and better than it used to be when I started teaching when the
library tended to be locked up for most of the day! However, the
traditional architecture and internal layout still too often leaves much
to be desired ...
