Celebrate Mother's Day in a New Way!
http://www.educationworld.com/a_lesson/lesson263.shtml
Tired of doing the same Mother's Day projects year after year? Take a look
at five new lesson plans we've created to celebrate mothers on their
special day! These lessons include math activities with a "mother" theme
(studying data about mothers in the workforce), learning about the history
of silhouettes (and actually making one), and turning old shoes into
planters that are bound to sprout wonderful new memories!

Wire Side Chat: A Forgotten Genocide Recalled
http://www.educationworld.com/a_curr/curr401.shtml
"I did not know when I opened my eyes the next morning that it was the last
day of my childhood." So begins 12-year-old Vahan Kenderian's account of
his experiences during the Armenian genocide in Turkey -- a holocaust that
Armenians today remember each April 24. Adam Bagdasarian, the author of
Forgotten Fire, talks with Education World about how he hopes his book will
inspire young people to reject violence and survive adversity.

Teacher Journal: Change Happens
http://www.educationworld.com/a_curr/curr366r1.shtml
"I can't pinpoint a certain day when I walked into the classroom and said
'Today is the day I will love all my students and they will accept me as
their teacher.' It was a gradual change -- a phenomenon that happened over
time. Mutual respect doesn't sit in the classroom and invade the bodies of
the people who enter the room; it needs to be earned."

Judy Carter's goals for her site are communication, instruction, and

SCHOOL ISSUES
----------------------------------------------------

Reform Means More Than Just Small
http://www.educationworld.com/a_issues/issues307.shtml
Research has shown that smaller schools are more effective at meeting
students' needs, but just breaking up a school into smaller parts does not
necessarily change the climate, according to Indiana University researcher
Thomas Gregory.

Voice of Experience: Time to Teach
http://www.educationworld.com/a_issues/issues308.shtml
U.S. teachers aren't alone in their frustrations over standards and
testing. "How had we let statistics become more important than children?"
wonders Sue Palmer, a British educator. Palmer has created a Web site aimed
at returning decisions about curriculum to the professionals -- the
teachers -- who know best!

Starr Points: Too Many Elephants?
http://www.educationworld.com/a_issues/issues306.shtml
"I spent hours on research -- utilizing a variety of possible search terms
-- and never found a specific, coherent description of what the role of the
public school today should be. I wonder, does such a description even
exist? If not, why not?"

Coaching Sparks Change in Boston Schools
http://www.educationworld.com/a_admin/admin267.shtml
In schools, as in business or government, accomplishing change is never
easy. In 1996, Boston schools embarked on a rigorous, multi-year
"whole-school change" initiative. All of Boston's public schools are now
part of that change effort, which is driven by the learning needs of
students in each school. Whole-school change, literacy, and math coaches
have been deployed throughout the system to train and support Boston
educators. Recently, Education World spoke with administrators, lead
coaches, and a teacher for a close-up look at how this coaching approach is
working in Boston.
