Download these wallpapers to your desktop for the ultimate view. * Detecting Other Worlds VIII: Radio Detection http://www.space.com/searchforlife/seti_doyle_020502.html We have discussed to date seven methods for detecting extrasolar planets in this series. During that time another two dozen extrasolar giant planets have been discovered, and the Kepler Mission, which will detect Earth-like planets around Sun-like stars, has been accepted by NASA as a Discovery Program. Within the next decade, therefore, we should have an idea if other "Earths" exist. Could there be a more exciting time than the beginning of such a Renaissance in our perspective of our place in the universe? * First Photos from Hubble's New Camera Released http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/astronomy/hubble_acs_020430-1.html The Hubble Space Telescope outdid itself today with the release of the first pictures taken by a new camera mounted on the orbiting observatory in March. The images range from depicting sheer cosmic beauty, in classic Hubble style, to the surprise finding of thousands of distant and previously invisible galaxies. ----------------------------------- Today in Missions/Launches: * Lindbergh Lands in Paris After Flight to Support Space Tourism http://www.space.com/news/lindbergh_lands_020502.html Erik Lindbergh arrived in France on Thursday after flying across the Atlantic Ocean to duplicate his grandfather's historic 1927 New York-to-Paris solo flight. * NASA Mulls Future Space Shuttles with No Pilots http://www.space.com/missionlaunches/ap_sli_020502.html The replacement for NASA's aging space shuttles may take off like a plane, be propelled by booster rockets that fly back to Earth and, in one of the more radical moves, eliminate pilots. * NRC Study Urges Caution About Possible Dangerous Martian Life http://www.space.com/missionlaunches/ap_mars_020501.html NASA faces a dilemma in planning to send people to Mars: The scientific desire to search for life there versus the need to prevent any such life from endangering the astronauts or the Earth. ------------------------------------ Today in Business/Industry: * U.S. Senator Vows To Restore Pluto Program http://www.space.com/spacenews/index.html Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D-Md.), the chairwoman of the U.S. Senate panel that oversees NASA's budget, indicated today that she will fight to restore funding for NASA's canceled mission to Pluto. ------------------------------------ * SpaceTV: http://www.space.com/php/multimedia/spacetv/ * Space Age Gear: http://www.space.com/businesstechnology/technology/space_gear-1.html * SpaceWatch: http://www.space.com/spacewatch/ * Space Age Jobs http://www.space.com/php/careers/ * Uplink: Share your opinion! http://uplink.space.com/ ------------------------------------- SOLAR and SPACE WEATHER (May 2, 2002) 3-Day Solar Forecast Solar activity is expected to be low to moderate.
