I. SUMMER MONTHS PROVIDE NO REST FOR THE WARY
-----------------------------------------------------------

Summer is fast approaching, and although the temptation to forget about
grants for a month or two is powerful—don’t do it! There are generally few
federal and state grant deadlines during the summer months (government
employees often are on vacation during this time), but this doesn’t mean
you should forget about grant-seeking. In fact, summer is an excellent time
to take stock of the past school year and plan ahead for the upcoming year.

Look at the state and federal grant deadlines during the past school year
and make a calendar of potential deadlines for the coming year. Remember
that in most cases, long-standing grant programs keep the same proposal
application deadlines from year to year. Expect that deadlines will fall
roughly in the same week they occurred during the prior year.

III. KEEP YOUR STAFF’S SKILL UP-TO-DATE

Ohio’s teachers are getting a helping hand as they enter the brave new
world of teaching with technology. This web site for a statewide initiative
dubbed "Technopoli" is helping educators in the Buckeye State find the
training they need to use technology effectively in the classroom. The site
provides a great model for other states to follow. The Ohio Learning
Network built the Technopoli web site to help educators and technical staff
overcome the challenge of keeping up with new learning technologies,
including research about what works and what doesn’t. Technopoli provides a
central resource for educators to find the professional development
opportunities they need without wasting valuable time. The site’s "Get
Updates" feature is a particular time-saver. Users simply fill out a
profile outlining their interests and training needs, and each week they
automatically receive an eMail update listing opportunities in the site’s
calendar of events that match their needs.
