TOP NEWS STORIES *********************************************************** Michigan launches $10 million one-to-one computing program ----------------------------------------------------------- Inspired by a similar technology program being rolled out in Maine, Michigan lawmakers have just committed $10 million toward the first phase of a plan that would give every student in the state a portable, wireless computing device over the next three years, according to Michigan House Speaker Rick Johnson, who is spearheading the initiative. TECH FUNDING NEWS *********************************************************** North Dakota schools receive free grade-tracking software ----------------------------------------------------------- Web-based computer software that helps teachers keep closer tabs on their students’ grades, attendance, and coursework will be distributed to schools throughout North Dakota after an extensive and sometimes frustrating tryout in the Bismarck school system. For the complete story, go to: http://www.eschoolnews.org/resources/funding/ Education Spotlight Program ----------------------------------------------------------- PLUS Vision of America, a maker of ultraportable projectors, has announced a new program called Education Spotlight. Through the program, PLUS Vision will donate three projectors and an electronic copyboard to a selected school each quarter, reflecting a commitment to increase the effective use of multimedia in K-12 education. Applicants are asked to give a unique example of how the projectors will be used when applying for the award. Recipients are chosen based on the creativity of their response, and PLUS Vision will share innovative applications with other educators on its web site. http://www.eschoolnews.com/resources/funding/ongoing.cfm#315 $100,000 from the Verizon Foundation ----------------------------------------------------------- To help children with special needs, the Verizon Foundation has given $100,000 to the Center for Applied Special Technology (CAST) to digitize books and create an online learning center. The online center, to be named the Universal Learning Center, will provide teachers with digital classroom materials for special-needs students. http://www.eschoolnews.com/resources/funding/awards.cfm#113 For the latest Awards & Deadlines, visit the eSchool News Online "School Technology Funding Center" at http://www.eschoolnews.org/resources/funding/ *********************************************************** III. EDUCATION TECHNOLOGY SITE OF THE WEEK *********************************************************** Chart a course for learning with this historical map collection ----------------------------------------------------------- A new web site now gives you the ability to instill a love of maps—and the history they represent—in your students, while teaching them valuable geography and cartography skills. The David Rumsey Historical Map Collection focuses on rare 18th and 19th century North and South America cartographic history materials —but the collection also includes historic maps of the world, Europe, Asia, and Africa. Categories include old and antique atlas, globe, school geography, maritime chart, state, county, city, pocket, wall, children’s, and manuscript maps. The collection is available over the web using a standard web browser such as Explorer or Netscape, but a special browser designed for researchers also can be downloaded. The maps can be viewed by country, state, publication author, or keyword. Visit: http://www.eschoolnews.com/resources/links/showLink.cfm?linkID=64 *********************************************************** IV. FEATURED PUBLICATION *********************************************************** School Technology Buyer’s Guide ----------------------------------------------------------- This powerful new online database will arm you with the most comprehensive information ever assembled about technology companies who sell products and services to the K-12 school market. Includes over 3,500 K-12 technology product and service companies. If you’re a potential buyer, you can check out the all new vendor Rating Profile. The Rating Profile can answer many questions about how the vendor conducts its business. Since the rating system is just getting started, many vendors will currently be listed as “Unrated.” If you have used a vendor’s service in the past, you can post ratings for other school technology professionals like yourself. Whether your response is positive, neutral, or negative, other educators will value your honest opinions, which will help them make better purchasing decisions. Give it a try. To rate a company: 1. Go to http://www.eschoolnews.org/buyersguide 2. Do a search for any of the 3,500 + companies listed inside the guide 3. Select the company from the results of your search 4. Then click on “Rate this company” in the top right-hand box inside the“ Company Rating Information” box 5. A pop-up window will appear. Answer each of the key questions listed there with a “Yes,” “No,” or “N/A” (Not Applicable). Then, enter your eMail address, and click “Submit Now.” Be assured your eMail address will be used for quality control measures only unless you indicate otherwise. That’s it *********************************************************** V. eSCHOOL PARTNERS UPDATE *********************************************************** New Innovative K-12 Site License Solution ----------------------------------------------------------- The Macromedia Studio MX K-12 Site License Solution is an innovative new program that gives your school access to teaching curriculum and teacher training and the freedom to use Macromedia Studio MX throughout your school for one affordable, set price based on the size of the school.
