A Maths Dictionary for Kids
http://www.amathsdictionaryforkids.com/
GRADE LEVEL: K-12

CONTENT: A+
A Maths Dictionary for Kids, by Jenny Eather, is a site rich with math
definitions, examples, and activities. The site is alphabetically arranged
with a list of math terms for each letter. When you choose the term you
want to learn about, it appears in a box on the right, usually along with
working examples or activities to demonstrate the concept.

AESTHETICS: A+
This site is colorful and attractive. The graphics support the content.
Flash Player is required and can be downloaded at the site.

ORGANIZATION: A+
Extremely easy to navigate, the site's main page is designed with two white
boxes in the middle of the page. Under those boxes, the ABC's appear. To
get a listing of all terms available for each letter, simply click on the
letter. The terms appear in the left-hand box. When you click on one of the
terms, the information about it appears in the box on the right.

REVIEW: A+
This impressive site defines and gives examples of 300 or more math terms.
In addition, most terms become working examples of their concepts. For
example, visitors can watch as an animation builds Base 10 blocks to 100
and then build their own numbers. Students can check out multiple examples
of Fibonacci numbers. Clicking on the term number gives users examples of
Hindu Arabic, Roman, Even, Odd, Ordinal, and Whole Numbers. Students can
learn about subjects ranging from basic numeration through advanced math
areas such as trigonometry. The use of quizzes, demonstrations, and working
examples makes the site very user friendly. For any math student, this is
an excellent resource in addition to being lots of fun!

OVERALL GRADE: A
Calculus-Help.com
http://www.calculus-help.com
GRADE LEVEL: 9-12, Advanced

CONTENT: A
Calculus-Help.com was developed by a calculus instructor to provide
additional help for his high school students. Since its development, it has
expanded to provide practice and help for college students in addition to
advanced high school math students. The site offers two weekly problems --
one considered to be at a College Calculus 2 level and the other a slightly
lower level problem. The following week, the solutions to the problems are
shown -- complete, detailed, easy-to-understand, plain English answers,
according to the site. There are also some tutorial modules being developed
to walk students through the subjects like a personal tutor.

AESTHETICS: B
The colored backgrounds make this site a little difficult to read.

ORGANIZATION: A
The site is easy to navigate. The link to the Problem of the Week is easily
found on the home page. There is also a search feature for the problem
archive.

REVIEW: A
Calculus-Help.com offers advanced math students a place to practice. By
searching for the type of problem they need help with, students can see a
detailed solution. At the present, there is a section on the site related
to the Superbowl of High School Calculus, an online competition between
teams of high school calculus students. In the Calculus Fun Stuff section,
there are several tutorials being developed using Flash animation. These
loaded very slowly on a slow modem connection. This section also offers the
Calculus-Help.com's Interactive Cheat Sheet, which contains all the
formulas students need to memorize for Calculus I and II.

David Perdue's Charles Dickens Page
http://www.fidnet.com/~dap1955/dickens/index.html
GRADE LEVEL: 9-12

CONTENT: A+
The Charles Dickens Page offers information about this important author,
his works and the London of the 19th century.

AESTHETICS: A+
This site has a lot of text but uses appropriate font size and spacing. It
is interspersed with small graphics that enhance the content.

ORGANIZATION: A+
Navigation is easy with the left-side menu of major areas of the site. The
content text also has embedded links to subsequent areas of the site with
more information on the topic and to outside sources.

REVIEW: A+
This site is a great overview of the life and times of Charles Dickens.
There is a lot of material here and it is covered very well. Visitors will
find a biography, plot summaries for the novels, explanations of the
characters, original illustrations, and a discussion of the artist who
created them, time lines that place Dickens in historical context and much
more. Information about 19th-century London is available along with an
interactive map. Users can click on a location on the map to see how that
particular place relates to Dickens's works. Included are a bibliography
and a categorized list of links to more information on the Web. Be sure to
check out the interesting sidebar information.

American Folklore
http://www.americanfolklore.net/
GRADE LEVEL: K-12

CONTENT: A
This site hosts a collection of folktales with one or more from each of the
50 U.S. states.

AESTHETICS: A
This is a simple site with a few well-chosen graphics and an easy-to-read
font size.

ORGANIZATION: A
The folktales can be accessed from a drop-down list on the main page or by
browsing six categories. Internal pages have a bottom navigation bar that
makes movement between the sections easy.

REVIEW: A
Storytellers, teachers, folklore fans, and students looking for material on
state folklore for school projects will enjoy this site. Visitors can
browse the site by story title or category and read about famous characters
such as Davy Crockett in Frozen Dawn or learn why you should never dance
with the devil in The Dance. Other categories include: State Folktales,
which includes at least one from each of the 50 states; Regional Folktales;
Historical Folklore; Ethnic Folklore, which includes African American and
Native American tales; and Tall Tales, which include ghost tales, holiday
tales, and legends. This is a great resource for a storytelling unit.

The Visible Human Server
http://visiblehuman.epfl.ch/
GRADE LEVEL: 9-12, Advanced

CONTENT: A+
The Visible Human Server, offered by the Swiss Federal Institute of
Technology, is an interactive site that allows users to view the human
anatomical structures in 3-D.

AESTHETICS: A+
This site uses Java applet technology to deliver the images. It works best
with the latest version of browser software. Free registration is required
for full use of the site.

ORGANIZATION: A+
The five main areas of the site are available from the left-side navigation
bar. The viewing applets open in a separate window and include instructions
for use.

REVIEW: A+
This amazing site explores the world of human anatomy. Using the applet
tools, visitors can slice and extract different structures of the human
anatomy models for viewing. There is also an option of building your own
model or creating animations. The 3-D Anatomical Structure Viewer allows
users to edit and select anatomic models, save a 3-D scene and record
animations. The Visible Human Video Editor "enables teachers to create
anatomic video presentations incorporating animations, sound, and cursor
movements." There are handy help files available for each area of the site.
