Today in Science/Astronomy:

* Space Weapons For Earth Wars
http://www.space.com/businesstechnology/technology/space_war_020515-1.ht
ml

While the latest Star Wars sci-fi saga makes its way to a cinema near
you, a true-to-life space drama is unfolding as a new breed of weaponry
may soon populate the heavens.

* Nightwatch On Mars
http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/solarsystem/mars_nightwatch_020515
html

There is a dark side to Mars. Experts studying the reddish globe in the
infrared see a wonderland of nighttime surprise. Through the art of
sunless science, researchers are trying to discern whether Mars is a
percolating planet of still huffing volcanoes and hot shot geysers.

* Download Deep Space Explorer Wallpapers

Now available for downloading -- desktop wallpaper images from Deep
Space Explorer, the 3-D interactive software that takes you on a journey
through time and space.

* Mars Odyssey's Picture of the Day: Water Ice Clouds over the Northern
Plains
http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/solarsystem/mars_daily_020514.html

This image, centered near 48.5 N and 240.5 W, displays splotchy water
ice clouds that obscure the northern lowland plains in the region where
the Viking 2 spacecraft landed. This image is far enough north to catch
the edge of the north polar hood that develops during the northern
winter.

Today in Missions/Launches:

* Six Dead So Far in Baikonur Cosmodrome Hangar Roof Collapse
http://www.space.com/missionlaunches/baikonur_roof_020513.html

Emergency workers carefully plucked six bodies from a heap of tangled
metal Monday, following the collapse of a hangar roof at Russia's main
space launch site. Officials said there was little hope of finding the
last two missing workers alive.

* Poll: Public Support for NASA Slipping
http://www.space.com/news/nasa_poll_020510.html

NASA's got some explaining to do if it wants to keep the taxpaying
public interested in bankrolling its space exploits.

* Maverick Rocketeers Pursue Cheap Space Access
http://www.space.com/missionlaunches/marericks_020510.html

There's no need to wait for big-ticket, big-money space programs to
secure the public right of entry into Earth orbit, says a group of
maverick rocketeers. A community of upstart startups is convinced that
there is more than one way to create cheap access to space.

Today in Business/Industry:

* Teets Proposes Cash Reserve for Program Managers
http://www.space.com/spacenews/index.html

The Pentagon should consider giving program managers funding reserves as
large as 20 percent of a program's cost so they can deal quickly with
problems that crop up on space programs, according to Peter B. Teets,
undersecretary of the U.S. Air Force and director of the U.S. National
Reconnaissance Office.
