Approximately 75,000 New York City students in fourth through 12th grades have
symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder related to the September 11

While the passing rate for the Texas Assessment of Academic Skills (TAAS) has
increased, the passing standard has been lowered. State officials say the
standard was lowered because the tests have become more difficult.

* NAACP Weighs Filing Bias Complaints
The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) is
considering filing complaints against 22 states it claims have not addressed
racial disparities in the public schools.
In November, the NAACP asked states to review 14 areas of potential bias, such
as the overrepresentation of minorities in special education programs, and
prepare a plan to correct them by May 10.

* Ohio Mulls Using Education Money
With the state feeling a financial pinch, some Ohio legislators want to borrow
$50 million in tobacco money designated for school renovations to pay the
state's operating expenses for 14 months.

* School Board Survey: Other Concerns Outweigh Violence
Only one in nine school board members said school violence is a major concern,
according to a survey released this week by the National School Boards
