Featured Space Store Product

* STS-111 Crew Mission Shirt
http://www.space.com/businesstechnology/technology/space_gear-1.html

This high-quality crew mission shirt features premium-weight 100% combed
cotton pique mesh, single-lock knit fashion collar, two pearl buttons on
placket and banded sleeves. There are only a limited number of shirts
available - we do not reorder once the mission is completed.

Today in Science/Astronomy:

* NASA Ignores ISS Remote Sensing & Photo Capabilities
http://www.space.com/news/iss_worf_020523.html

The International Space Station (ISS) sports an extraordinary optical
quality window - the best ever flown on a piloted spacecraft. Missing at
NASA, however, is clarity of vision regarding full use of this unique
porthole on the world.

* NEAR Resurrection: Bringing Back the Dead Spacecraft

l

A death-defying comeback might be in store for NASA's Near Earth
Asteroid Rendezvous (NEAR) spacecraft. The probe is now muted, quietly
resting in a no-shout zone on the surface of asteroid 433 Eros.

* Europa Shows Evidence of Life's Ingredients, But Thick Ice Frustrates

tml

A trio of unrelated new studies show that while Jupiter's moon Europa
should have the ingredients necessary for life, finding any bugs on the
icy moon would be difficult because its watery ocean lies beneath an
impenetrable, frozen shell that is several miles deep.

* Rarely Seen Southern Lights Photographed at South Pole
http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/planetearth/southern_lights_020522
html

Striking images of the Aurora Australis, the atmospheric phenomenon
known familiarly as the Southern Lights, are available from the National
Science Foundation (NSF). Like its more familiar counterpart, the Aurora
Borealis, or Northern Lights, the phenomenon is caused by the solar wind
passing through the upper atmosphere. But the Aurora Australis is much
less frequently observed because so few people live in Antarctica during
the austral winter.

Today in Missions/Launches:

* Bass, Garver in Moscow to Undergo Medical Tests
http://www.space.com/news/garver_bass_020522.html

Boy band member Lance Bass and a former NASA official are currently in
Moscow vying for a chance to claim the next seat on a Russian
spacecraft, a Russian official said.

* Advanced Propulsion Comes Of Age
http://www.space.com/businesstechnology/technology/advanced_propulsion_0
20522-1.html

NASA is known worldwide for routinely putting people into Earth orbit.
The agency is also revered as the only organization that has flung
humans at escape velocity speeds to the Moon. However, NASA could also
be known as an agency that's going nowhere fast.

* Chinese Astronauts Train in Secret
http://www.space.com/news/china_space_020521.html

Training in secret, a dozen fighter pilots are getting ready to make
history as China's first astronauts.

Today in Business/Industry:

* Liberty Media Makes Bid to Take Over Astrolink
http://www.space.com/spacenews/index.html

Liberty Media's satellite subsidiary is in negotiations to purchase the
moribund Astrolink broadband-satellite project and restart it as a
two-satellite system for high-speed data links to the Americas and
Europe.

SOLAR and SPACE WEATHER (May 23, 2002)

3-Day Solar Forecast
Solar activity is expected to be moderate during the next three days.
The most likely sources for M-class events are 9957, 9960 (N14E19), and
9961. There continues to be a slight chance for a major flare or a
proton producing flare.

3-Day Aurora Forecast
Earth's geomagnetic field is expected to be mostly unsettled with a
chance for some active periods during the next 24 hours. An extra dose
of energy from a coronal mass ejection is expected to arrive Friday. Due
to the apparent direction of the event, a direct hit is not expected,
but it is likely that the eastern flank of the disturbance will impact
the Earth. Activity levels are expected to be mostly active, but there
is a chance for some isolated storm level activity. Skywatchers in
northern parts of the United States and Europe may see the aurora.

Solar Data
The current sunspot number is 185, and the solar wind speed recently
clocked in at 405 kilometers per second.

The solar wind density was 14.6 protons per cubic centimeter.

(Speed and density values are snapshots in time and change during the
day.)
