Today in Science/Astronomy:

* Satellite Spotting: How to Find Iridium, Shuttle or the ISS
http://www.space.com/spacewatch/satellite_hunting_020524.html

Skywatching is typically about looking for natural objects and
phenomena, but there are now a host of interesting targets orbiting
Earth that anyone can spot, from the space shuttle to the International
Space Station to satellites that can briefly outshine the brightest
stars.

* Galileo Prepares for Final Fling Around Jupiter
http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/solarsystem/galileo_update_020524.
html

Galloping Galileo is nearing its swan song finale. The veteran
spacecraft has been on the job probing giant Jupiter and its brood of
moons since December 1995.

* New Observations of Early Universe Help Confirm Theories of Formation

ml

The most detailed glimpse ever gained of the early universe shows
ripples in space back before there were any stars. This finding adds
support to theories of how the universe began in an initial Big Bang,
inflated rapidly, then developed the first galaxies.

* Stephen Hawking Demands Halt of Book Publication
http://www.space.com/news/hawking_book_020523.html

Stephen Hawking has asked the Federal Trade Commission to stop
publication of an upcoming book.

Today in Missions/Launches:

* Auction Fails to Sell Buran, Russian Shuttle Remains Available
http://www.space.com/news/spacehistory/buran_auction_ends_020523.html

A Los Angeles radio station's effort to auction off a Russian Buran
space shuttle ended Wednesday with no sale.

* X-45 Robotic Combat Plane Makes Dramatic Debut

l

The Boeing Co.'s X-45, the first robotic plane designed specifically to
fly combat missions, has successfully made its maiden flight.

* Bass, Garver in Moscow to Undergo Medical Tests
http://www.space.com/news/garver_bass_020522.html

Boy band member Lance Bass and a former NASA official are currently in
Moscow vying for a chance to claim the next seat on a Russian
spacecraft, a Russian official said.

http://www.space.com/spacenews/index.html

NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center has awarded Ball Aerospace &
Technologies Corp. a $94 million contract to build the spacecraft for
the National Polar-orbiting Operational Environmental Satellite System
(NPOESS) Preparatory Project, NASA announced May 22.

SOLAR and SPACE WEATHER (May 24, 2002)

3-Day Solar Forecast
Solar activity is expected to be moderate during the next three days.
The most likely sources for M-class events are 9957, 9960 (N14E19), and
9961. There continues to be a slight chance for a major flare or a
proton producing flare.

3-Day Aurora Forecast
Earth's geomagnetic field is expected to be mostly unsettled with a
chance for some active periods during the next 24 hours. An extra dose
of energy from a coronal mass ejection is expected to arrive Friday. Due
to the apparent direction of the event, a direct hit is not expected,
but it is likely that the eastern flank of the disturbance will impact
the Earth. Activity levels are expected to be mostly active, but there
is a chance for some isolated storm level activity. Skywatchers in
northern parts of the United States and Europe may see the aurora.

Solar Data
The current sunspot number is 185, and the solar wind speed recently
clocked in at 405 kilometers per second.

The solar wind density was 14.6 protons per cubic centimeter.

(Speed and density values are snapshots in time and change during the
day. )
