SchoolGrants Summary Newsletter Vol. 2, No. 9 June 2002 NEWS and MORE THANKS! A special thanks to each of you who responded to my request for feedback regarding the possibility of conducting SchoolGrants grant-writing workshops! A number of you expressed interest and more requested some kind of online workshop. We are in the planning stages now of developing a workshop to be held in Dallas and we are also exploring the idea of an online workshop. More data will be sent to those who expressed an interest as it becomes available. TITLE I The U.S. Department of Education (ED) is requesting comments on proposed Title I rulemaking. Comments should be submitted to [EMAIL PROTECTED] no later than June 5, 2002. Find the entire notice of proposed rulemaking at http://frwebgate.access.gpo.gov/cgi-bin/getdoc.cgi?dbname=2002_register& docid=02-11128-filed. The proposed regulations will implement changes to the academic standards and assessment provisions of Title I, Part A of the ESEA to ensure strong accountability for results. The ED is also considering proposing regulations for other provisions in Title I, Part A of the ESEA, which will be announced at a later date. IDEA REAUTHORIZATION As you may know, the Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA) is currently under revision. In "A Timely IDEA: Rethinking Federal Education Programs for Children with Disabilities," three experts present their ideas on how the reauthorized program should be structured. Each believes the program will be improved by a greater emphasis on academic achievement for children with disabilities, a reduction in paperwork and complexity, and better funding. Take a look at the publication at http://www.cep-dc.org/specialeducation/timelyidea2002.pdf. Now is the right time to let your Congressional representatives know what you like about IDEA, what needs to be improved, and what needs to be completely revamped. SCHOOLGRANTS SPECIAL!
