TeachersFirst Update - June 3, 2002

It's June!

Professional Goodies:
...and while we know everyone is looking forward to summer, we also
suspect that many of you will be back in the classroom for inservice
activities of some sort during the summer. With that in mind, please pay
a visit to our recently refurbished professional content matrix. There
you will find our latest resource listings for topics like:
TechTopics - great suggestions and tools to integrate technology into
your teaching
guidance and career planning resources
general professional content
AIDS and related health issues
In addition, you'll find links to our large collection of special
education resources. The Professional Resources Matrix is at:

Is it Warmer?
Students often have trouble making "real-world" connections about the
implications of concepts like pollution and global warming. Mercury
Rising is a site about climate change that takes students on a series of
expeditions that show the effects of climate change on different
ecosystems around the world. This site has unusually deep content and
visual resources, and it could be used in many ways. You can find it in
our middle school earth science listings:

What Can I Read?
Sometimes the biggest barrier to encouraging reading in primary age
students is simply finding the right book. The Spaghetti Book Club is an
online source for "reviews by kids" of several hundred different
children's books. While these short reviews certainly are not the
definitive critique, they may be just the tool to encourage your
reluctant readers to find a book that sounds right to them. You'l find
this listing in our reading resources:
http://www.teachersfirst.com/tchr-subj.cfm?subject=reading&lower=1&upper=5

A Trip to the Past
Looking for an electronic field trip? Try TeachersFirst's visit to a
frontier fort from the American Revolution. It's a great way to learn
about how frontier communities defended themselves against attacks from
both the British and native tribes. There is even a section on colonial
toys and games. You can visit the frontier fort at:

Hot Topics
Last Friday, a three-judge federal panel declared the "Children's
Internet Protection Act" cannot require libraries to filter their web
content. This decision has obvious implications for students and
libraries alike. You will find more, including an assortment of related
links, on our Hot Topics page: http://www.teachersfirst.com/hot.htm

Summer Reading!
For those of you who missed last week's Update, we remind you that our
companion site, teachersandfamilies.com has a rapidly growing summer
reading list section. We have listed well-reviewed books for
preschoolers through high school seniors, with a short description of
each. You can find the Teachersandfamilies summer reading page at
http://www.teachersandfamilies.com/open/summerread.html

...and if you would like a flyer to remind students and parents about
our
family resources, we have one that is ready to print using your Acrobat
reader. The poster is at: http://www.teachersandfamilies.com/poster3.pdf

Features
This week's featured sites include an interesting photographic art
exhibition site, a site about careers in technology, a great reference
source on researching the quality of web content, and lots more. You
know where to find them: http://www.teachersfirst.com/feature.htm

OK, that is more than enough for one week. Have a great one, give an
extra pat on the back to those departing students, and remember that you
really do make a difference.
