SOLAR and SPACE WEATHER (July 24, 2002)

3-Day Solar Forecast
A major sunspot region has rotated onto the visible face of the Sun.
Region 39 will rotate across the visible side of the Sun over the next
two weeks. It produced a major flare Monday and another Tuesday, and
more are expected. Solar activity is expected to be moderate to high.
Regions 36 also has the potential to produce isolated major events.

3-Day Aurora Forecast
Earth's geomagnetic field is expected to be quiet to active on
Wednesday, when the charged particles from a major solar flare are
expected to arrive. Minor storm conditions are expected on Thursday with
active to minor storm conditions on Friday.

Solar Data
The current sunspot number is 226, and the solar wind speed recently
clocked in at 415 kilometers per second.

The solar wind density was 3.1 protons per cubic centimeter.

(Speed and density values are snapshots in time and change during the
day.)
