Featured Space Store Product

* Corgi Apollo Recovery Helicopter
http://www.space.com/spaceagegear/

This long-awaited collectible has finally arrived - and - will sell out
fast. From the aviation archive of Corgi comes the Sikorsky SH-3D Sea
King - HS-4 Sqn., U.S. Navy - 1969 Apollo Recovery helicopter.

Today in Science/Astronomy:

* Perseid Meteor Shower Begins Slow Crawl to Aug. 12 Peak
http://www.space.com/spacewatch/perseids_begins_020725.html

The annual Perseid meteor shower has begun in modest fashion and will
soon start building toward a peak Aug. 12, when as many as 60 or more
shooting stars could be visible each hour from the Northern Hemisphere.

* Is E.T.'s World a Planet?
http://www.space.com/searchforlife/dyson_seti_020725.html

Freeman Dyson is betting that alien life doesn't live on a world like
yours. More specifically, if you check out the tentative wager this
celebrated physicist has logged at the Web site www.longbets.org, you'll
see that Dyson's hunch is that the first discovery of extraterrestrial
life will be made someplace other than on a planet or on a satellite of
a planet.

* Science and Music Merge for Fall Concert
http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/space_music_020725.html

A group of musicians are working with an astrophysicist to put together
a performance built around signals from space recorded over the last 40
years. Commissioned by NASA, the musical production "Sun Rings" is a
collaboration between the string group Kronos Quartet and University of
Iowa researcher Donald A. Gurnett.

* Observing 'Alien' Life on Earth
http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/planetearth/vents_europa_020724.ht
ml

The best place to learn how to identify extra-terrestrial organisms may
not be in space, but beneath the Earth's oceans.

* Evidence for Ancient Bombardment of Earth
http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/planetearth/earth_bombarded_020724
.html

The Moon provides a stark snapshot of the violence of our early solar
system. Its largest craters are evidence of asteroid impacts that
scarred the surface between 3.8 billion and 4 billion years ago.

-----------------------------------

Today in SpaceFlight:

* Stratospheric Platform Serves As Satellite
http://www.space.com/missionlaunches/skytower_020724.html

A high-flying unpiloted solar-electric aircraft has doubled as a giant
telecommunications tower. From an altitude far above Earth, the craft
transmitted hours of next-generation mobile voice, data, and video
services to handheld devices on the ground.

* Stolen Apollo Moon Rocks Recovered by FBI in Florida
http://www.space.com/news/ap_moonrocks_020723.html

Three employees of the Johnson Space Center in Houston and another man
were charged in an alleged plot to sell stolen moon rocks from the
Apollo missions for $1,000 to $5,000 a gram, the FBI said.

* Space Adventures Teams with XCOR Aerospace To Develop Sub-Orbital
Vehicle
http://www.space.com/missionlaunches/space_tourism_020722.html

Astronaut wannabes looking for a short space jaunt may soon have an
alternative to shelling out millions of dollars for a trip to the
International Space Station (ISS).

------------------------------------

Today in Business/Industry:

* Senate Panel Restores Pluto Mission
http://www.space.com/spacenews/

A Senate appropriations subcommittee voted to restore funding for the
New Horizons mission to Pluto in approving a $15.2 billion budget for
NASA for 2003.

Regions 36 also has the potential to produce isolated major events.

3-Day Aurora Forecast
Earth's geomagnetic field is expected to be quiet to active on
Wednesday, when the charged particles from a major solar flare are
expected to arrive. Minor storm conditions are expected on Thursday with
active to minor storm conditions on Friday.

Solar Data
The current sunspot number is 226, and the solar wind speed recently
clocked in at 415 kilometers per second.

The solar wind density was 3.1 protons per cubic centimeter.

(Speed and density values are snapshots in time and change during the
day.)
