SchoolGrants Summary Newsletter Vol. 2, No. 11 August 2002 NEWS AND MORE It was great to meet some of you at the 2002 Education Grants Summit in San Diego during July! I hope you enjoyed the conference and the beautiful weather as much as I did! I’m sorry this newsletter is coming out a little later than usual. I’ve been swamped with getting proposals submitted! Speaking of proposals, the U.S. Department of Education (DOE) is seeking grant reviewers for the Mentoring Program grant competition. Over 1,000 proposals were submitted and the DOE is seeking 350 reviewers. Reviewers cannot have a conflict of interest, which includes having submitted an application for funding under this program. Learn more at http://www.mentoring.org/take_action/reviewers.adp There’s bad news for school districts in Texas who submitted Dropout Prevention grants. The San Antonio Express-News reports that Texas districts that applied for dropout prevention funds through the U.S. Department of Education (DOE) are ineligible because, according to two state senators and confirmed by a spokesman at the DOE, Texas Education Agency didn't provide dropout data in accordance with a definition used by the National Center for Education Statistics. http://news.mysanantonio.com/story.cfm?xla=saen&xlb=180&xlc=768863 If you haven’t already, you might want to take a look at the Threat Assessment Guide for Schools that was developed through a collaborative effort with the Secret Service and the U.S. Department of Education. Find the report, along with a number of other publications related to safe and drug-free schools, by visiting http://www.ed.gov/offices/OESE/SDFS/publications.html. Letters were recently mailed to superintendents around the U.S. that give preliminary guidance on how schools can implement public school choice, supplemental education services, and collective bargaining provisions included in the No Child Left Behind law. The 6-page letter can be viewed at http://www.ed.gov/News/Letters/020614.html. This document may be helpful to you in managing many of your programs. **** Braitmayer Foundation http://www.braitmayerfoundation.org/ The Braitmayer Foundation supports organizations and programs from across the U.S. that enhance the education of K-12 children. The Foundation is particularly interested in curricular and school reform initiatives, professional development opportunities for teachers, and local community efforts that increase educational opportunities for students. Grant requests of up to $10,000 should be submitted by November 15. **** National Endowment for the Arts - Arts Learning http://www.nea.gov/guide/ArtsLearning03/ALindex.html This program offers three separate areas that help build the foundation for a lifetime of arts experience. It supports both in-school and out-of-school projects for Early Childhood (younger than kindergarten), School-Based (K-12 and directly tied to curriculum and instructional program), and Community-Based. Eligible applicants are nonprofit, tax-exempt 501(c)(3) U.S. organizations; units of state or local government; and federally recognized tribal communities or tribes. Applicants may be arts organizations, local arts agencies, arts service organizations, school districts, and other organizations that can help advance the goals of the Arts Endowment. Applicants must have a 3-year history of programming or of working with children and youth. Most grant awards will range from $5,000 to $100,000. All grants require a match of at least one to one. The deadline to apply is August 12, 2002. **** Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy http://www.barbarabushfoundation.com/nga.html The goal of the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy's National Grant Program is to develop and expand family literacy efforts nationwide and to support the development of literacy programs that build families of readers. Approximately 10 grants of up to $50,000 will be awarded. Eligible applicants must include all of the following components in their proposals: reading instruction for parents or primary caregivers, literacy or pre-literacy instruction for children, and intergenerational activities where the parents and children learn and read together. Applications are due September 6, 2002. **** The American Music Education Initiative http://www.nmc.org/amei.html The National Music Foundation's American Music Education Initiative identifies, recognizes, and supports the creative educational accomplishments of teachers who use American music in their classrooms. Teachers of any subject area who use American music as part of their curriculum are invited to submit lesson plans. A limited number of Finalists, Semi-finalists and Honorable Mention lessons will be chosen. Finalists and Semi-finalists will receive grants of $500. Applications must be submitted by September 16, 2002. **** EARN $$ FOR YOUR SCHOOL The FundingFactory http://www.fundingfactory.com/bredirect.asp?etcepid=1247 The FundingFactory offers two ways that schools can earn leading edge technology, sports and recreation equipment (including playground equipment), or even cash by recycling empty printer cartridges and used cell phones. Schools collect empty printer cartridges and used cell phones and send them to The Funding Factory. Over 20% of US schools currently participate in the program that is "the recognized gold standard for innovative fundraising." There's more! You can solicit area businesses to send their used cartridges and cell phones to FundingFactory with credit going to your organization. FundingFactory provides free collection boxes and pays all shipping costs to schools and businesses. This program has received very positive comments on the Bring Home the Bacon listserv from participating schools. Be sure to check it out!
