Welcome! I cannot believe it is almost the end of August. I am ready for the cool weather after all of the 100+ degree days we have had here on the humid east coast. If you aren't on TheHomeSchoolMom In The Kitchen email list, you might want to check it out. There have been some good discussions about what kind of lunches to serve when the kids are home every day, as well as freezer recipes and biscuit mixes. Join 200+ homeschool moms as we discuss how to keep tummies filled with quick, inexpensive, and healthy food. It seems that as we get closer to fall, I receive more and more requests for information on homeschooling from parents preparing to try home education for the first time. Two books that I consider essential to new homeschoolers, Homeschooling Step by Step by LauraMeary Gold and Joan Zeilinski and Home Learning Year by Year by Rebecca Rupp, are both available at amazon.com. These books are great for any homeschooler, but if you are new to homeschooling I highly recommend that you check out these books. They are resources that will help you year after year in your homeschool journey. Whether you are interested in learning about state laws, homeschooling styles and methods, or just need motivation, Homeschooling Step by Step will guide you through the new lingo and multitudes of homeschool styles. With Home Learning Year by Year, you can design a curriculum from preschool to high school using the resources and lists of what your child should be exposed to at each age. Both of these authors are veteran homeschoolers (10+ years) who have practical information to offer both newbies and experienced homeschooling moms and dads. Enjoy this week's resources! Important Announcement: Well, I thought that I had all of the glitches worked out when I sent out the last newsletter. Boy was I wrong! You probably noticed the odd format, which was somehow changed by the mailing program after I input the text. Then I found out that several of you received multiple copies of the newsletter. My apologies if you were one of the folks who received two, three, or even four copies! So, although I thought I was back on schedule for the weekly edition last issue, it took the entire two weeks since you last received a newsletter to get all the kinks worked out of the subscription list. As I mentioned last issue, I had to manually add on many people who requested subscriptions but were "dumped" by the mailing list manager I was using. Due to the manual add- ons, some subscribers who requested to unsubscribe might have inadvertently been added back to the list. If this is the case, please accept my apology. You will find unsubscribe instructions at the end of the newsletter. If you receive multiple copies of the newsletter or have friends that think they should be receiving a copy and are not, please notify me and I will work to correct it ASAP. Thanks for your patience during this changeover! Educational Sites & Freebies Flying Turtle Exploring FT Exploring is a fun award winning site that explores energy and other basic science principles and shows how the same fundamental principles control how things work in nature, living organisms, and human technology. The articles are carefully researched, accurate, easy to understand, and according to my e-mail responses, funny. In addition to providing good basic explanations, the creative thought- provoking approach helps to generate an interest in science and technology. This site is divided into subject areas in such a way that it is a good reference for anyone using unit studies and needing supplemental resources for science. Flying Turtle Exploring National Gallery of Art Loaner Program "Over 150 teaching resources are loaned free of charge to educational institutions, community groups, and individuals. Programs are designed to meet national standards in the visual arts. The catalogue is indexed by subject area and presentation format." Resources available include DVDs, videotapes, slides, multi-media, and PDFs. National Gallery of Art Loaner Program Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation Each year the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation awards 250 scholarships valued from $4,000 to $20,000 to high school seniors. "Coca-Cola Scholarships are awarded based on character, personal merit and commitment. Merit is demonstrated through leadership in school, civic and extracurricular activities, academic achievement, and motivation to serve and succeed." The selection process is completed in 3 phases. In the first phase, the application "seeks a record of the student's overall involvement in school and community affairs as well as academic success and employment." The second phase requires "detailed biographical data, an essay, a secondary school report and personal recommendations." Finally, "in the spring of each program year, Finalists attend the National Competition in Atlanta, convened by the Foundation at its expense, to determine recipients of each level of award. The National Selection Committee designates 50 Finalists as National Scholars and 200 Finalists as Regional Scholars." This year, students can apply for the scholarship online after Labor Day. Applications for the first phase of the process are due by October 31. Homeschooled students are encouraged to apply. Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation Free Standard Deviants Video or DVD Those of you with DirectTV are already familiar with the Standard Deviants, but others may want to take advantage of this offer for a free video or DVD from the educational resource company.
