TEACHERS

Marzano, Robert J., Pickering, Debra J., and Pollock, Jane E. (2001).
Classroom instruction that works: Research-based strategies for
increasing student achievement. Reviewed by Gwen Gawith
http://www.theschooldaily.com/articleView.asp?articlePK=14721

How many teachers do you know who come home from school and say, "Goody,
goody; I'll cruise around ERIC and read some juicy educational research
and apply it tomorrow in my teaching"? Why is there a chasm between
educational research and teaching practice? Why do teachers go on
teaching in ways long discovered by researchers to be ineffective?
Well, simply because research is hard to get hold of, turgid to read, and,
unless you know your way round, there's so overwhelmingly much of it
that, unless you HAVE to read it, there is little incentive to do so.
SO?
SO, EVEN IF YOU NEVER READ RESEARCH, BUY AND READ THIS BOOK BECAUSE IT
DOES IT ALL FOR YOU. It summarises some of the most powerful research
ever published on teaching and learning strategies and APPLIES it to
what teachers can and should do to enhance learning and teaching. Better
still, it explains HOW and gives great examples that are easily
applicable to the New Zealand classroom...

PARENTS/FRIENDS

Overseas students should pay more for education.
So 73% of you answered in the recent TSD straw poll. Does this mean
that overseas students are putting too heavy a burden on our school
facilities, that NZ students aren't getting a fair deal, or that it's
just too cheap?

technology." Selwyn Parker. Industrial Research Limited, 2002; $29.95.

the 'scientist in a lab coat' and follows the fortunes of a group of
innovators and their projects over more than 10 years, as they take
brilliant ideas from the lab to the market place. Readers are given an
exciting insight into the challenges of the competitive world of science
the race to be first, the courtroom dramas and the ultimate

The Cooper Column: 'the need for male teachers
http://www.theschooldaily.com/articleView.asp?articlePK=15129

The number of male teachers in our primary schools is tiny and getting
smaller. The trend is accelerating because male teachers have a high
average age so more are retiring than coming in. Thus many children,
perhaps most, will go through primary school without a male teacher.
There is some argument that this lack of male teachers does not matter
because a good teacher is a good teacher and gender has nothing to do
with this. In some ways this is a powerful argument. It is supported by a
number of studies, which have shown that teacher quality is more
important than anything else, even class size.
