Classroom instruction that works: Research-based strategies for increasing student achievement. Reviewed by Gwen Gawith http://www.theschooldaily.com/articleView.asp?articlePK=14721 How many teachers do you know who come home from school and say, "Goody, goody; I'll cruise around ERIC and read some juicy educational research and apply it tomorrow in my teaching"? Why is there a chasm between educational research and teaching practice? Why do teachers go on teaching in ways long discovered by researchers to be ineffective? Well, simply because research is hard to get hold of, turgid to read, and, unless you know your way round, there's so overwhelmingly much of it that, unless you HAVE to read it, there is little incentive to do so. SO? SO, EVEN IF YOU NEVER READ RESEARCH, BUY AND READ THIS BOOK BECAUSE IT DOES IT ALL FOR YOU. It summarises some of the most powerful research ever published on teaching and learning strategies and APPLIES it to what teachers can and should do to enhance learning and teaching. Better still, it explains HOW and gives great examples that are easily applicable to the New Zealand classroom... --------------------------------------------------------------------------- PARENTS/FRIENDS Overseas students should pay more for education. So 73% of you answered in the recent TSD straw poll. Does this mean that overseas students are putting too heavy a burden on our school facilities, that NZ students aren't getting a fair deal, or that it's just too cheap? A review by Vicki Hyde CRSNZ: The Cooper Column: 'the need for male teachers http://www.theschooldaily.com/articleView.asp?articlePK=15129 The number of male teachers in our primary schools is tiny and getting smaller. The trend is accelerating because male teachers have a high average age so more are retiring than coming in. Thus many children, perhaps most, will go through primary school without a male teacher. There is some argument that this lack of male teachers does not matter because a good teacher is a good teacher and gender has nothing to do with this. In some ways this is a powerful argument. It is supported by a number of studies, which have shown that teacher quality is more important than anything else, even class size. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- LEARNZ2002 'Mountains of Mana' - Auckland Volcanoes - register now! http://www.learnz.org.nz/2002/ Articles from the latest 'Good Teacher' and NZ Information Literacy Archive http://www.TheSchoolQuarterly.com Special Web Solutions and Services for Schools http://www.heurisko.co.nz/webservices For school audioconferencing POLYCOMs are essential http://www.learnz.org.nz/polycom/ 'Wordsmith 2.0' an integrated toolbar in MS Word providing literacy support from textHELP! http://www.texthelp.co.nz Reach out to international educators through ASCD http://www.ascd.org/aboutascd/internationalwebsite/index.html?schooldaily Read&Write 6 Gold - just released toolbar for literacy and study support http://www.texthelp.co.nz/ ******************************************* For digest instead of individual postings, send the message: set k12newsletters digest to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe, click and send (no body or subject: required) mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] K12 Newsletters mailing list is a service of Classroom Connect - http://www.classroom.com Archives for K12 Newsletters can be found at: http://www.classroom.com/community/email/archives.jhtml?A0=K12NEWSLETTERS **********************************************************
