Surveying the text' http://www.theschooldaily.com/articleView.asp?articlePK=14971 When you are given an essay topic to answer you need to read many texts to help you find the information for your essay. First you have to choose a book. Then you need to survey the book to see if it will help you with your particular topic. You should use both the index at the back and also the contents page at the front of the book to find out whether this book has the information you need. You cannot read the whole book, so you need to find the relevant pages to your particular topic. Once you have found a chapter that may be suitable you then have to survey it to find the paragraphs that might help you. Most university texts have chapters with various headings throughout. Scanning through these headings should give you an idea of whether that particular chapter is relevant to your essay topic and is worth reading in more detail. I keep an eye on the progress of both the NCEA and the work of the NZQA because Tasmania is in the process of establishing its own Qualifications Authority (TQA). In this we are drawing from the work of the NZQA and it has proved to be a valuable source of information for us. It is also world class. The NCEA is not a lot different from the Tasmanian Certificate of Education (TCE) a standards-based, criterion-based assessment, certification system for Years 9 - 12 and has been in place since the late 1980's. Contrary to the dire predictions being made about the NCEA it did not lead to a collapse in C19th century education practices, students have not been disadvantaged, employers have gradually come to terms with it, parents understand it and standards have, if anything, improved. An innovation to improve children's math scores: Can Singapore's success story be duplicated in Israel? http://www.theschooldaily.com/articleView.asp?articlePK=15166 >From http://www.haaretzdaily.com By Relly Sa'ar: Mathematical achievement in the Israeli education system leaves much to be desired. In the results of an international comparative mathematics test for eighth graders, published two-and-a-half years ago, Israel was ranked 28th out of 38 countries - between Thailand and Tunisia. The average mathematics score for Israeli students (466) was 21 points lower than the global average. Eighth graders in Singapore, on the other hand, were in first place with a score of 612 - 146 points more than their Israeli counterparts. Just 5 percent of Israeli students excelled on the international exam, compared with 46 percent of Singaporean students. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ LEARNZ2002 'Mountains of Mana' - Auckland Volcanoes - register now! http://www.learnz.org.nz/2002/ Articles from the latest 'Good Teacher' and NZ Information Literacy Archive http://www.TheSchoolQuarterly.com For school audioconferencing POLYCOMs are essential http://www.learnz.org.nz/polycom/ ASCD for professional development opportunities and services for educators http://www.ascd.org/joinascd.html?schooldaily ******************************************* For digest instead of individual postings, send the message: set k12newsletters digest to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe, click and send (no body or subject: required) mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] K12 Newsletters mailing list is a service of Classroom Connect - http://www.classroom.com Archives for K12 Newsletters can be found at: http://www.classroom.com/community/email/archives.jhtml?A0=K12NEWSLETTERS **********************************************************
