WELCOME FROM THE EDITOR
***********************************************************

Hello Gleason Sackmann,

A breakthrough of special significance for millions of Americans is the
top story at eSchool News Online this week.

A team of Yale University researchers has released a study proving that
dyslexia is the result of a physical miscommunication within the
brain--and NOT the result of intellectual shortcomings that can be
outgrown over time.

Also on tap at the web site is the latest survey in the Readers' Choice
Awards series. Here's where we survey the collective insight of the
nation's savviest school leaders for the benefit of your peers.

The current Readers’ Choice installment focuses on "K-12 Management
Software Systems." Such systems are more important than ever in light of
the mounting data demands of the No Child Left Behind Act and other
data-oriented mandates. Weigh in on what systems have worked best for you.

Cast your votes at
http://www.eschoolnews.com/resources/surveys/editorial/rca/sms/

Results of your voting will be published in the print edition of the
October eSchool News.

Your colleagues will thank you for it, and so do I!

Cheers,

Study reveals neurological origins of dyslexia
-----------------------------------------------------------
Using technology to pinpoint the neurological origins of dyslexia, a team
of Yale University researchers has released a study that proves dyslexia
is the result of a physical miscommunication within the mind—and not the
result of intellectual shortcomings that can be outgrown over time.

Nearly one in five Americans struggles with dyslexia, which prohibits the
mind from recognizing the sound structures of certain words. The study’s
findings suggest dyslexia is not a developmental disease, which eventually
will go away, but a permanent brain disorder that educators must learn to
teach to.

III. EDUCATION TECHNOLOGY SITE OF THE WEEK

Improve parental involvement with “Connect for Success”
-----------------------------------------------------------
Building partnerships and alliances with parents can be a daunting task,
especially for inexperienced teachers. Now, a new toolkit, funded in part
by Met Life, aims to make these efforts easier. Teachers can turn to
“Connect for Success: Building a Teacher, Parent, Teen Alliance” to
research strategies and take advantage of tools geared toward encouraging
parental involvement and participation. This free resource, available in
the form of an online book, contains a number of charts, statistics,
proven theories, and new suggestions for teachers who are unsure how to
approach their students’ parents. The online toolkit confronts a number of
issues, including helping parents understand how to advance their child’s
education, dealing with children and parents from different cultural
backgrounds, creating engaging activities, and constructing ways to
encourage extended learning at home. The program was designed specifically
for teachers in impoverished middle and high schools, but a majority of
the content is relevant for educators in any number of institutional
settings.

TEACHERS COLLEGE TO OFFER A WEBSITE WITH POST-9/11 RESOURCES FOR TEACHERS
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York, NY -- August 19, 2002 – On September 4th, Teachers College
Columbia University will launch a website with resources for teachers who
are seeking ways to bring a more global approach to their teaching.

Columbia University’s Teachers College prides itself on providing ideas
and tools to support teachers as they look for ways to incorporate broader
views of the world in their classrooms. The events of September 11
brought the need for greater world awareness to the forefront of education
discourse. In January 2002, Teachers College hosted the Teach In, a forum
allowing curriculum and diversity experts to collaborate with educators
about this pressing issue as it relates to classroom practice.

During September 2002, as a follow-up to the Teach-In, Teachers College
will present a website and online forum. The website will be launched
September 4th and will include lesson plans, video presentations and other
materials from leaders in curriculum development and diversity issues,
including faculty from New York City public schools and Teachers College.
Beginning September 9th, visitors to the site will have the opportunity to
reflect on and share their experiences and ideas with others in a
web-mediated discussion forum. Teachers College invites all interested
educators to visit
http://lists.eschoolnews.com/cgi-bin/nph-t.pl?U=65&M=399578&MS=14079
starting September 4th.
