THIS WEEK FROM THE LIBRARIANS' INDEX TO THE INTERNET...

In New This Week (the list below, also at http://lii.org/ntw ),

First, after the serious events of this week, we felt the need for a
bit of levity, and indexed five sites that ranked fairly high on the
"fun meter" even if they were a bit bereft of informational value.
There's something for everyone: a site of dubious veracity about a
weird "sport," a high-quality site about junk food, a "museum" of
condiment packages, a one-of-a-kind resource for Episcopalians, and
a mock-analysis of the mysterious but widely-observed relationship
between family emergencies and school projects.

We return to daily life with sites related to Virginia Woolf, algae,
juvenile crime, chromosomal disorders, acronyms, environment, a
site for the horticulturally challenged, and more.

More New This Week ( http://lii.org/mntw ) --

This week "More New" is a collection of two dozen resources related
to September 11, Afghanistan, national security, and related issues.
You can find additional resources at September 11 and Beyond,

Thanks for reading!

**********************************************************************

   Junk Food News
This tasty site features stories and newswires about
the junk food industry. Beyond the entertainment value
of the latest news about empty calories, this site
shrewdly illustrates by example how the junk food
industry promotes its product. A well-done hobby site by
       a professional writer.

   Cheese Racing
"Everything you need to know about this deceptively
simple, yet addictive and fiercely competitive sport,"
which involves throwing slices of wrapped cheese on
barbecue grills. The site includes history, rules of the
game, information about the umbrella organization,
CRASS (Cheese Racing Association), and speculation on
the potential application of cheese-racing to NASA
       spacecraft development.

The Archbishop Rowan Williams Baseball Card
The perfect Web site to share with your favorite
Episcopalian. Includes key facts and dates for Rowan
Williams, elected Archbishop of Canterbury in July 2002.
We were unable to locate the "entire set" of baseball
cards for Anglican bishops, and suspect it does not
really exist. Requires Acrobat Reader and a sense of
       humor.

documentation and display of condiments found in
packets. The packets in the Museum are specifically all
packets other than sugar packets, which are currently
well documented by other sources." Searchable, and
browsable by type of condiment (honey, ketchup,
mustard, etc.). Also features special collections, such as
       Ramen Packets.

   The Dead Grandmother/Exam Syndrome and
the Potential Downfall Of American Society
A tongue-in-cheek "academic" paper, complete with
graphs and charts, based on the observation that "A
student's grandmother is far more likely to die suddenly
just before the student takes an exam, than at any
other time of year." By a genetics professor, who
reports his observations and offers some possible
remedies for the problem. Originally published in The
