A very classy shirt for casual days at work or out on the golf course! ----------------------------------- Today in Science/Astronomy: * SPACE.com and SPACE NEWS present Complete Coverage of the World Space Congress http://www.space.com/news/worldspacecongress2002.html Once every decade, the world's space community assembles to take stock of the present and chart new directions for humanity's next ten years in space. Read the latest reports here each day from the World Space Congress 2002 in Houston, Texas. * Teachers: Tell Your Students to Take A Hike http://www.space.com/searchforlife/seti_devore_hike_021010.html Six days from now, on October 16, a unique expedition begins. A team of scientists led by Dr. Nathalie Cabrol and her husband Dr. Edmond Grin take off for Chile to scale Lincancabur, a 5,916 meter (19, 473.5 feet) tall volcano. By comparison, Mt. Whitney, the tallest peak in the Sierra Nevada range is 4,418 meters tall (14,496 feet), almost a mile lower, and Mt. McKinley in Alaska, the tallest peak in North America is only slightly taller than Lincancabur at 6,194 meters (20,320 feet). All of these are topped by another South American volcano, Aconcaqua at 6,960 meters (22,910 feet) in Argentina, the tallest in the Western hemisphere. Any way you look at it, Lincancabur is a long hike up. * Sky Surprises: See a Supernova http://www.space.com/spacewatch/surprise_crab_021010.html It is July 4, 1054 AD: At dawn, astronomers in China and cave artists of the Anasazi and Mimbres Indian tribes of the future desert southwest of the United States gaze into eastern sky, as they often do. These people know the sky, know each and every star as an old friend. But suddenly there shines a dazzling star where none had been seen before. * Planet Found in Tight Binary Star System http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/binary_planet_021009.html A planet larger than Jupiter has been discovered in a two-star system in which the stars are closer together than any pair previously found to harbor a planet. * Global Warming on Pluto Puzzles Scientists http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/pluto_warming_021009.html In what is largely a reversal of an August announcement, astronomers today said Pluto is undergoing global warming in its thin atmosphere even as it moves farther from the Sun on its long, odd-shaped orbit. ----------------------------------- Today in SpaceFlight: * Mission Atlantis: Shuttle Docks with Space Station http://www.space.com/shuttlemissions/ Shuttle Atlantis docked with the International Space Station (ISS) on Wednesday following a two-day chase that began Monday with launch from the Kennedy Space Center. * Mission Atlantis: STS-112 Launch Day Image Gallery http://www.space.com/php/multimedia/imagegallery/ With all of the attention on the new "shuttlecam," you may have missed these scenes from NASA TV as Atlantis was sent on its way to the International Space Station on Oct. 7, 2002. * NASA and Pentagon Pledge Cooperation In Space But Provide Few Details http://www.space.com/news/nasa_townhall_021008.html Senior NASA and Pentagon officials pledged further cooperation on space programs, but unveiled no major new programs or initiatives at an Oct. 8 forum for space professionals. ------------------------------------ Today in Business/Industry: * House Panel Approves $15.3 Billion NASA Budget http://www.space.com/spacenews/ A House budget panel approved Oct. 7 a $15.3 billion budget for NASA for 2003, $300 million more than the White House requested for the U.S. space agency. ------------------------------------ * SpaceTV: http://www.space.com/php/multimedia/spacetv/ * SpaceWatch: http://www.space.com/spacewatch/ * Space Age Jobs http://www.spacejobs.com/ * Uplink: Share your opinion! http://uplink.space.com/ ------------------------------------- SOLAR and SPACE WEATHER (October 10, 2002) 3-Day Solar Forecast Solar activity is expected to be low to moderate through Friday. 3-Day Aurora Forecast Earth's geomagnetic field is expected to be mostly unsettled to active through Friday. Solar Data The current sunspot number is 128, and the solar wind speed recently clocked in at 402 kilometers per second. The solar wind density was 3.0 protons per cubic centimeter.
