Their "Online Classrooms" column offers valuable advice for those interested in distance education via the Internet. Assessment of discussions has been the topic of an ongoing debate among online instructors and learners for quite some time. Assessment in this environment can be very subjective, just as with most written assignments. It is up to the individual instructor to decide what will be assessed and how it will be done. Will it be quality or quantity? Are learners assessed by how many times and how much they post in discussions or are they assessed according to what they say and how they say it? Or will it be a combination of both? Discussion threads can be used for both formal and informal assessment and each instructor must decide the best method(s) based on each class. Some Thinking Principles by Mark Treadwell http://www.theschooldaily.com/articleView.asp?articlePK=16176 We are developing a series of thinking principles which we, as educators will need to teach our students so they can truly become life long learners. Two of these principles are briefly explained below: As schools increasingly rely on ICT's (Information & Communication Technologies) to manage their workload and also to access information in order to provide students with background information, certain principles need to be considered. <b>Principle 1:</b> The most powerful attribute of conceptual model building is that the owner can actually create and build new knowledge in excess of that which contributed to the development of the initial model. Philadelphia To Require Longer Days For Lagging Students http://www.theschooldaily.com/articleView.asp?articlePK=16266 The school day is about to get longer for about 50,000 Philadelphia students who are struggling academically. The district plans to begin after-school programs in 113 elementary and middle schools on Oct. 21, and students performing below grade level in grades three through eight will be required to attend according to schools chief Paul G. Vallas. Vallas provided the details during a news conference with Mayor Street and children's advocates at Grover Washington Jr. Middle School in Olney. The school is one of 11 in the city already offering after-school and evening sessions through the Beacon Centers program, launched in conjunction with the Children's Investment Strategy initiative.
