Rushed export education levy may be too taxing for international
students
http://www.theschooldaily.com/articleView.asp?articlePK=16428
The government's proposed export education levy has not been
tested against industry needs and priorities, has not been consulted on
with the industry and is being rushed through with little planning,
Education Forum adviser Norman LaRocque says. On Thursday, the
government
released a consultation document looking at options to estabish an
export
education levy for an industry development fund, worth $3.9 million
annually by 2005. It proposes setting the levy at 0.5% of gross foreign
fee-paying student tuition fee income. Feedback is sought by 15
November.

The World’s Largest Lesson! 'Have you always wanted to break a World
Record? Now you can!'
http://www.theschooldaily.com/articleView.asp?articlePK=16432
(15 October) English-To-Go, the principle website for e-learning
materials, will attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the
largest simultaneous lesson! Students and teachers from around the globe

will be invited to join in a lesson about the danger of landmines! It
will be the largest attempt ever made anywhere in the world! Last year,
English-To-Go attempted a similar exercise and managed to conduct a
lesson with 2006 teachers to 79,739 students in 114 countries! This year

we want it to be bigger and better and hope to pass on an anti-landmine
message to as many young people as possible.

Microquests - by Mark Treadwell
http://www.theschooldaily.com/articleView.asp?articlePK=16177
Teachers attempting to use computer technology within their
classrooms, are faced with a dilemma of having to teach two classes of
students simultaneously, those on the computer and those remaining.
This
situation can cause the teacher to minimise the use of information &
communication technologies in the classroom. Each of the activities
outlined below provides an easy way to set up and administer a set of
tasks that do not require teacher intervention, and also to allow
students to become teachers of their peers. Each of the tasks ranges in

complexity, level of thinking and degree of information and
communication
technology competence required.

Steve Berezowski comments on ACT's Donna Awatere Huata's news releases
http://www.theschooldaily.com/articleView.asp?articlePK=16450
Why does your Daily give so much attantion to the ramblings of
Awatere-Huata. This latest report she is discussing suggests we follow
the examples of Australia and the US to improve our student results. Do
we really want to follow a system that achieves much poorer results than

ours. Where is coming from.

Craig Smith responds to NZ Herald article 'Teenage Angst is all in the
Head'
http://www.theschooldaily.com/articleView.asp?articlePK=16431
The causes of "teenage angst" and the so-called typical rebellious
behaviour are surely not as simplistic as this article would indicate.
The scientists appear to have followed a strictly materialistic,
empirical approach to their research. This leaves out all manner of
emotional, intellectual, psychological, social, familial and spiritual
considerations.
