Messages from Our Members

Hello All, My name is Amy and I am currently a senior Middle
Childhood Education major at Ohio Northern University. I was recently
looking at the teacher stuff newsletter and the reader's comments.
There was a person named Lu who was asking for ideas to use to teach
about Ohio. There is a great book titled B is for Buckeye by Marcia
Shonberg. The books goes through every letter of the alphabet and
relates them to Ohio. There are great illustrations and excellent
background information. This book would be a great introduction to a
unit on Ohio and it could lead the way for many project ideas such as
students creating their own Ohio book with ideas that include famous
people from Ohio, Historical cities, places of interest, and many
more topics. This book is available on www.amazon.com for around
$12.00. The ISBN number is 1-58536-004-X. I hope this information
will be helpful. Enjoy, Amy

Does anyone have any ideas for working with at-risk students in pull
out groups? I have done many guided reading activities and shared
reading and writing activities. I guess I'm looking for a change or
something new and fun to use with small groups. (preferably in
reading and writing areas) Thanks so much. I look forward to your
responses. moorejlee

Dear Nancy,
Since you work so many miracles with your helpful suggestions, I
thought I would give it a try. I have two needs. 1) I need any kind
of help, suggestions, or resources to use in helping the students
that seem to have no success in spelling.
2) Is there an easy way to catalog books in the Dewey Decimal system?
I am adding new books into our library but this is not the field that
I was trained in.
Thanks, Tammy

Comment: I didn't know I could work miracles. I did look up some
resources for you that are included in this newsletter.
Nancy

This really is quite funny! It proves we all miss-read now and then!!

Hi! I'm student teaching in a first grade classroom and am in the
process of developing a unit on deserts. Any suggestions you could
add in your newsletter?
Thanks!
Melanie

Comment:
Drop by Nancy's Kitchen (http://www.nancyskitchen.com) and check out
the easy to prepare desserts. Just click on Recipe categories and
choose from there. A lot of them could be integrated into a unit
because most of them are very easy to make. You could include in your
unit following directions and measurements. I used to love to
ask my students to make their own recipe before I gave them a real
recipe. Most had no idea what measurements would be appropriate.
Nancy

Comments: Oooops. LOL. I will include deserts and their habitat in
the next newsletter.

Need help with microwave disaster!
Post by writesbooks on Today at 12:05am

Hi,
I'm a writer and I'm currently working on a science book for
children. The theme is 'cooking with science'. I'm trying to find a
microwave mistake that can ruin the taste/texture of a food. For
example, are there any foods that just don't microwave well...that
would be really awful if you tried? I need something that would be a
bit silly, but completely safe. No exploding eggs, boiled water...etc.

In the book I'm talking about the differnt ways heat is transfered.
The previous page is called "How to burn your toast". Now I need a
microwave cooking disaster!
