I tried a clean rebuild after dalibor's long fix night. The result is still unlucky:

after talking to the gettext maintainer, I think the only fix is to get rid of gettext completely in the source tree. GNU gettext was simply not meant for this ;)
I've done that, so it woul dbe nice it you could cvs update and try again.
