Congratulations, you seem to have found a bug in gettext :( I've had problems with using the internal gettext before[1], so I've removed support for that again. Unfortunately, I have to suggest biting the bullet and installing GNU gettext, so that configure can use that external gettext :(
In an unrelated note: many thanks to Jim and Dalibor for dealing with the recent spam/troll bs. Maintaining a large project like this is enough of a thankless task without having to waste time dealing with such things.
