your example works perfectly in the kaffe I have on linux. Both with the kaffe-awt as with gtk-peer. Since a kaffe 1.4.2 doesn't exist, current version is 1.1.7... You might want to update your kaffe and at least check with -version what you are actually using under that name. Maybe the FreeBSD guys did some mess.
