UK Efficiency & Productivity Analysis Network

International Conference on

"Global trends in the Efficiency and Risk Management of Financial Services
and the Financial Crisis"

Hosted by

Efficiency and Productivity Research Unit (EPRU) University of Leicester
School Management Leicester, United Kingdom, 14 & 15 November 2009

In recent years, the financial services industry has experienced many
changes such as technological progress, financial innovations, increased
competition from non-financial firms, and deregulation. These changes
transformed the financial landscape and the nature of the services offered
by financial firms. For example, firms became aggressively involved in
off-balance-sheet activities and other non-interest income related services,
they formed strategic alliances through mergers and acquisitions to broaden
and diversify their portfolio of services, and they introduced advanced IT
systems to offer internet services and improve their risk management systems
and customer service.

However, the 2007 crisis, which spread rapidly across the globe, reminded
everyone, about the fragility and leveraged nature of the financial industry
in addition to the damaging nature of the financial crisis for the economy.

Furthermore, it revealed that, despite improvements in the efficiency and
productivity of financial services firms, risk management systems remain
sub-optimal, and that there is a need to improve corporate governance and
internal control systems. Additionally, the crisis re-opened the debates on
the use of financial innovations and the usefulness of alternative
regulatory frameworks.

One of the new challenges for policy makers is to design regulations that
take account of the interactions between competition, efficiency, and
financial stability.

The Conference is organised by the UKEPAN (UK Efficiency & Productivity
Analysis Network) with an aim to provide a forum for debate among
international researchers and policy makers. The Conference programme also
includes round

-table meetings to establish a European Network on Financial efficiency with
an aim for the group to eventually set up a European project within the
Seventh Framework program (FP7). The keynote speech will be presented by
Professor

Iftekhar Hasan (Lally School of Management & Technology, RPI, US(..
