As salaam alaikum and Ramadan Mubarak Br. NIDAL,

About 2-3 months ago, I told this Br. Loay that I would help him with new
ideas,
etc. for the waqf (Islamic charitable endowment fund) being established by
ISBCC
(the largest mosque in the Northeast U.S.). Yesterday right before asr, I was
speaking in person with Br. Loay and during this brief conversation I came up
with two new ideas for Islamic finance:

1) Imagine that various waqf around the country were to be interconnected to
act as a mutual buffer or rainy day fund. This would be like a takaful (Islamic
mutual cooperative insurance) involving institutions (i.e., the mosques and
their waqf) instead of involving individuals, and would thus involve sharing
both the rewards and risks in order to help uplift and support more the broader
muslim community inshallah.

2) Imagine for a waqf the idea of combining a mutual co-op with a REIT (real
estate investment trust). Then, Br. Monem told Br. Loay and I that such an
arrangement has already been implemented in a halal way in Santa Clara, CA.

Do you have any further suggestions or ideas that might be helpful?

Jazakallah Khair,

P.S. I have been extremely busy with both secular and Islamic finance for the
environmental or "green" sector. I also realized that the most cost-effective
way to make Islamic microfinance or microinsurance work would be to combine it
with mobile money, i.e., banking based upon mobile phones because many poor
people who do not have access to a desktop or laptop computer can still obtain
access to cheap mobile phones, and so I am thinking about how to best combine
Islamic finance with mobile money.
