Eric --

I see that the info I just sent is old and slightly out of date. Here
is corrected information. The upshot is that both TN3215_CONSOLE and
TN3270_CONSOLE may be specified for a kernel. If they are both
specified, the type of VM console is accepted as is (learned from
interaction with VM via a special interface); if only one is specified
and the current type is the other, code forces it to be the one.

Support for 3215 line mode terminal
CONFIG_3215
Include support for IBM 3215 line-mode terminals.

Support for console on 3215 line mode terminal
CONFIG_3215_CONSOLE
Include support for using an IBM 3215 line-mode terminal as a
  Linux system console.

Support for 3270 line mode terminal
CONFIG_3270
Include support for IBM 3270 line-mode terminals.

Support for console on 3270 line mode terminal
CONFIG_3270_CONSOLE
Include support for using an IBM 3270 line-mode terminal as a Linux
system console. Available only if 3270 support is compiled in
  statically.

Sorry for the previous false info.
