SUMMARY
For some reason, the automatic saves started happening right after one another,
with a minimal delay that didn't match what was set in the settings.
When I tried to save the file manually, I got an error. I don't remember its
exact text, but it mentioned “File is busy”.
I think the error said:
“Could not save <Path to file>.
Reason: Image is busy.
Could not start saving <Path to file>.
animation.kra. Wait until the current save operation has finished.”
But the problem was that the current save operation had never finished - the
automatic saves were happening one after another, and none of them were
successful.
All I had to do was simply close Krita via Task Manager and rrestore the work
that was lost.

I had this bug a few days ago, not just now, so I don't remember all the
details and it's hard for me to bring any specifics to this bug report.
I didn't report this bug right away because I just didn't know what caused it,
how to reproduce it, and so on. I just couldn't provide absolutely no
information that would allow the developers to solve it, other than stating
“Bug with infinite automatic saves”.
Now I noticed that Krita Log is capturing some information, and I think I was
able to find just the session in which this bug occurred, so I figured that
maybe the developers could use this to help in some way.
Speaking of some of the information in this log... I'm not sure why it mentions
frames - my project was just a regular drawing with a few layers, not an
animation.
Curiously enough, a user on Reddit reported a similar problem, but that user
was just creating an animation.
I've never done animation in Krita, so I couldn't mistake the session. And by
the number of automatic saves and their frequency you can see that this is the
session in which this bug occurred.
Perhaps this bug has something to do with animations, but I don't see how I
could have this happen if I had a regular drawing and not an animation.
What's also curious is that I, like the user on Reddit, also have a fairly
“low-end” computer, with the same 8Gb RAM.
Only in my case the drawing didn't consume more than a gigabyte either, if I'm
not mistaken.
