I made a correlation recently, but not sure if it helps get to the root cause.
I've found the login freeze happens rarely (if ever) when I keep my Plantronics
USB wireless headset receiver unplugged from my desktop. When it is plugged in
when the computer goes to sleep and is woken back up, the ~1 minute freeze
before the password prompt appears occurs consistently.
