It still has some way to go but Plasma now does the right thing in 99 % percent of cases and when it doesn't a Plasma restart gets things straight every time. @Vitaly G: It's been suggested to delete at least KScreen configuration after an upgrade to Plasma 5.8 and its accompanying software packages.
