Note though: It is not about color of a layer but color of a gradient assigned to a vector object. Gradient shown on canvas goes from red to transparent. Gradient shown in the tool options dialog goes from white to transparent. Double clicking the white gradient node on the tool options docker updates the gradient shown on the canvas to white as well.
