"if kernel command line args cause problems, then the workaround for that
should be in the kernel"

What they say is: "No. iio-sensor-proxy takes the orientation towards the
physical hardware panel. Only the compositor has enough rope to figure out the
correct orientation. How would iio-sensor-proxy [or the kernel] ever know if a
compositor honors the drm property?" E.g. they say that "phoc" has an option to
ignore that property.
