I use a dark theme in case that matters, and also have Klassy installed - the default light Plasma UI really hurts my old eyes. I usually use Details view for everything in Dolphin and turn off all previews, although the behavior still occurs in Icons view for the new account. Not sure what I should be checking, since KDE is such a huge, complex system. Is there anything, besides the Dolphin settings, that might affect the way clicks in the panels are processed?
