            Bug ID: 509448
           Summary: SD/DVD + h265 (hevc) = youtube clipping
    Classification: Applications
           Product: kdenlive
      Version First 25.04.0
       Reported In:
          Platform: Fedora RPMs
                OS: Linux
            Status: REPORTED
          Severity: normal
          Priority: NOR
         Component: Rendering & Export
          Assignee: [email protected]
          Reporter: [email protected]
  Target Milestone: ---

kdenlive-25.04.0-3.fc40.x86_64
mlt-7.30.0-1.fc40.x86_64
ffmpeg-free-6.1.2-2.fc40.x86_64
vlc-3.0.21-15.fc40.x86_64
vlc-plugin-ffmpeg-3.0.21-15.fc40.x86_64

A few short videos (less than 10mins) that I rendered in kdenlive and uploaded
to youtube exhibited a strange issue where parts of the video that came later
were overlayed onto earlier parts (audio was unchanged though). The video plays
fine in vlc for example, but the video once processed by youtube had this
problem.

After much investigating, I narrowed it down to a minimal case, and found some
workarounds.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE:

-start new project, select the dimensions to be: (SD/DVD -> DV/DVD NTSC -- ie,
720x480)
-generate a timecode video:
right click in the project bin frame
                 -> generators -> counter
options: [count up, counter style timecode, 30
seconds]
-drag your newly generated timecode mlt clip to video track V1
-resize the "selection zone" bar to cover the clip beginning to end (or use
guides to mark the beginning and end)
-click render
select from "Ultra high definition (4k)" -> MP4-H265 (HEVC) --
keep defaults
                choose "selected zone"
-render the file
-check your mp4 on vlc, and note the counter goes up from 0 to 30, no numbers
skipped
-upload the mp4 to youtube

RESULTS:
The video on youtube now goes from 08:00 to 16:00 then back to 08:00 and up to
29:00.

EXPECTED:
Video should go from 00:00 to 29:99.

WORKAROUNDS:
-use h264 instead
-create new custom profile using libx264 to use constant bitrate (I think any
settings work, but I tested with GOP={auto,14,30} and all worked. I originally
thought it might be related to B-frames, but even when set to 0 with CBR it
works)

OBSERVATIONS:
If the profile selected was 640x480 (instead of 720x480) the problem did not
show up in my tests.

I also noticed that when dragging the youtube "scrubber" (the red horizontal
line with a red circle you can drag to move across the video timeline) the
numbers increase in order correctly).
Playback quality selection in youtube made no difference (360p, etc).
