Since there is a process "kscreenlock_greeter" using up 100% CPU in the background when this happens, I thought it might be interesting to see what this process is doing with all that CPU time. I attached a gdb and then applied a very crude debugging method of "run backtrace, let the process continue for a short time, run bt again, repeat a few times".
