The driver rejected the output configuration Hmm, failing to change the display config should never have side effects. The kscreen-doctor output also shows that the old mode is still selected. I tried replicating some setting being wrongly persisted when applying an output config fails in an autotest, and it works as expected, so I'm not sure where the side effects could come from.
