Open a console (Konsole?) and cd to the folder on the thumb drive where the kmy
file is, and type "file trilsys.kmy".  The posted error message says it's
trying to open a gnucash file.  That doesn't make any sense to me. so we have
to figure out why it's doing that.
How, exactly did you try to open the file?  Does it work if you cd to that same
folder and say "kmymoney trilsys.kmy"?
How did you create the symlink on your desktop?  
I don't suspect any problem just because the thumb drive is formatted FAT32,
but strange things do happen.
